Smudging in recreation centres
Smudging is an Indigenous tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Smudging involves the burning of medicinal or sacred plants gathered from mother earth. The four sacred medicines used in First Nations’ ceremonies are tobacco, sage, cedar, and sweetgrass. This practice is based on traditional beliefs that the smoke produced purifies the body, mind and space and cleanses away any negative energy and emotions to create a positive mindset for those involved in the activities. The smoke and scent produced during a smudge is minimal and often dissipates quickly.
Only spaces and procedures that have been reviewed and are smudge ready should be used for ceremonies. This is to ensure the health and safety of everyone and security of the building.
These are the indoor spaces that are smudge ready
- Victoria Road Recreation Centre – Cedar Room
- West End Community Centre – Lions Lair and Community Room #2
- Evergreen Seniors Community Centre – Room 4
