The year 2027 marks the City’s bicentennial — 200 years since the establishment of the town of Guelph by John Galt and the Canada Company on land acquired from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation through the Between the Lakes Treaty, No. 3 (1792).
Today, Guelph is home to generations of Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island and settlers from around the world. The bicentennial provides an opportunity to reflect on and commemorate the past two hundred years of history at this place we now know as Guelph; to gather to contemplate and celebrate our community as we presently experience it; and to use this milestone to initiate action that contributes to the ongoing evolution of the city we aspire Guelph to be.
Guelph 200 imagery
The above image is the official branding for Guelph 200. Designed by the City of Guelph’s Graphic Designer, Allison Graef, this image embodies the enthusiasm and uplifting nature of the place we call Guelph. It focuses on the Two Rivers – the Speed and Eramosa – which have been flowing for thousands of years and will be flowing for thousands more. The rivers flow upwards, like the flow of Guelph’s never-ending spirit. The upwards river forms a heart showing the love that so many have for Guelph.
Imagery lies withing the colours, too. The cyan blue represents the clear sky, water, innovation and tranquility. The light green represents health, growth, prosperity and environmentalism. Orange represents friendship, youth, energy and warmth. Finally, the dark green is used to convey land, agriculture, forests and endurance. The colours chosen represent elements found within Guelph’s vibrant nature.
