Don’t let the cold get you down. A variety of positions are also available in our recreational centres throughout the winter season (generally late August until May). Positions include: shift leader, rink attendants, dining room staff, aquatic instructors, lifeguards and much more. Applications are accepted year round at each arena and a Career Fair is typically held in early August. Watch this website and your local newspaper for details.

Ice rinks

The City of Guelph offers a variety of part-time opportunities for our rinks/arenas. The recruitment process typically begins around August. At that time, these positions will be listed under our current openings section of our website. Below are sample job descriptions, listing the duties, qualifications, and pay rates to help you best prepare when these jobs do become open.

Shift Leader Civic Precinct

Duties

  • Operate ice re-surfacers for rink resurfacing
  • Recognize potential accident causes and watch out for and eliminate them.
  • Report without delay any accidents, defects in the ice etc.
  • Ensure safety of skaters at all times
  • Perform general maintenance and cleaning duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Monitor the operation of a refrigeration plant (record plant temperatures, pressures etc.)

Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating an ice-resurfacer would be an asset (SIRO certificate)
  • Current or ability to obtain Emergency First Aid/CPR Certificate
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public
  • Strong organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Have a valid class G drivers license

Skate Attendant

Duties

  • Maintain a safe and fun skating program
  • Skate among participants to ensure ice safety
  • Ensure safety of skaters at all times
  • Recognize potential accident causes and watch out for and eliminate them.
  • Report without delay any accidents, defects in the ice etc.
  • Assist the maintainer in clearing the ice of skaters for rink resurfacing
  • Perform general maintenance and cleaning duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Good skating ability
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public
  • Current or ability to obtain Emergency First Aid/CPR Certificate

Rink Attendants

Duties

Sleeman Centre

Located in the heart of downtown Guelph, the Sleeman Centre is a state of the art facility that opened in September of 2000. With a seating capacity of 5000 people, the Sleeman Centre is used for concerts, trade shows, conferences and various sporting events. It is also the home of the 2004 OHL champions, Guelph Storm.

Winter Control Operators

Sidewalk Winter Control Operators (temporary)

Sidewalk Winter Control Operator job description

Qualifications

Successful candidates will be decisive, self-motivated, and able to communicate in a cordial and professional manner. You will operate equipment relating to Sidewalk Winter Control operations including but not limited to Sidewalk Plow with Plow Blade or Snow Blower Attachment. Winter Control training will be provided. You will comply with all applicable regulations/requirements, report variances to daily work plans, and actively participate in a team environment. As well, you will complete daily time sheets and report vandalism, mechanical difficulties, and damage. Mechanically inclined, you are able to perform physical labour, including lifting and shoveling. You must have a valid Class G licence in good standing and have held such licence for the past 5 years.

Hours of work

This role is required to work during or following snow storms for shifts ranging from 4 to 12 hours in duration. Hours will be as needed on a Call In basis, Monday through Sunday up to a maximum of 12 hours per day and 60 hours per week. Ability to respond to the worksite within 30 minutes would be required.  These positions are for approximately 20 weeks duration from December to April.

Roads Winter Control Operators (temporary)

Seasonal Winter Control Operators job description

Duties

You will operate equipment relating to Winter Control operations for Roads including, but not limited to: Tandem or Single Axle plow/spreader truck with or without a wing unit; and a front end loader. Winter Control training will be provided. You will comply with all applicable regulations/requirements, report variances to daily work plans, and actively participate in a team environment. As well, you will complete daily time sheets, report material quantities used, vandalism, mechanical difficulties, and damage.

Qualifications

You are able to perform physical labour, including lifting and shoveling. You have five years recent experience operating DZ vehicles and relevant heavy equipment in winter driving conditions. You must have a valid DZ licence in good standing and have held such licence for the past 5 years.

Hours of work

40 hours per week.  Standby is a requirement of this position. These positions are for approximately 13 – 16 weeks duration commencing approximately December.
