Key dates
- May 27, 2025: Council determines filling the Ward 6 councillor vacancy either through an appointment or a by-election.
- May 28, 2025: City officially announces appointment process to fill vacancy
- June 9: Nominations for Ward 6 open
- July 7: Nominations for Ward 6 close
- July 10: Candidate’s names and personal statements published in the meeting agenda for the Council meeting to follow on July 23
- July 23: Council meeting to hear from nominees and vote on the successful candidate
Apply to Council Vacancy – Ward 6
Requirements are:
- A person who is a resident of the City of Guelph, or an owner or tenant of land in the City or a spouse of such an owner or tenant;
- A person who is a Canadian Citizen;
- A person who is at least 18 years old; and
- A person who is not prohibited from voting under any other Act or from holding municipal office.
They must provide:
- Council Appointment Consent of Nominee Form
- Council Vacancy Declaration of Qualifications Form
- Proof of identity and residence
They may choose to provide:
- A personal statement of qualifications, to a maximum of five 8.5 x 11 pages in length, for consideration of Council. This statement must comply with section 4.12.4 of the Procedure Bylaw.
Application process:
- Individuals must book an appointment with the Clerk’s office to submit documentation in person to sign and confirm their identity. Appointments can be booked by calling 519-837-5603 or emailing [email protected].
- Nominations will be certified upon receipt of the total completed package. Nominations will open June 9 and close July 7 at 4 p.m. A candidate who chooses to withdraw must do so in person and in writing, prior to 10 a.m. on July 18.
- The candidate’s names and personal statements will be published in the meeting agenda, which will be published on July 10.
- The meeting to appoint will take place on July 23. Each candidate will be given up to 5 minutes to address Council. Each councillor will then be able to ask up to two questions of the candidates. Council will then vote on the candidates; the candidate who receives greater than 50% of the vote of members present will be the successful candidate.
Municipal Election Compliance Audit
An eligible voter who believes that a candidate or registered third party advertiser has contravened the election campaign finances rules may apply for a compliance audit of their campaign finances.
