Railways and trains in Guelph

Guelph has three (3) separate railway owners and four (4) different rail operators:

  1. The City of Guelph owns the Guelph Junction Railway (GJR), which is operated by the Goderich-Exeter Railway. This rail line is named the “Goderich Subdivision” as it once extended to Goderich.
  2. Metrolinx owns the “Guelph Subdivision” used by GO and VIA passenger train operators as well as Canadian National (CN) Railway freight trains.
  3. Canadian National (CN) Railway owns the “Fergus Spur” and “Guelph North Spur”, which used to be part of a longer rail line that existed between Lynden and Palmerston. CN freight trains operate on this line.
