About the Garden
The f.u.n. Commons Westmount Garden is located at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, on the south side of the property, next to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic High School on Westmount Road in Guelph, Ontario. The garden was originally established as the Guelph Youth Farm through partnership with Everdale Farm, The SEED, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and other community partners as a youth farm project. Then the City of Guelph in collaboration with The Art of Soil Collective established “Food from Home = Food for Home” (FFH)² – a 3-year project that supported newcomers to join local urban farming and community garden networks. The garden had been kept up by individuals from these and other organizations, as well as various community members, with the original infrastructure, but little to no funds.
Current stewardship
In 2025, 10C Shared Space and food uniting neighbours took over coordinating gardening activities for the season. The original infrastructure was removed and returned to Everdale Farm, with the exception of any items that were purchased or left on the site.
About 10C Shared Space
10C Shared Space (10C) is a welcoming hub for social change, geared towards collaborative work towards community wellbeing and vitality. 10C’s mission is to create inclusive and accessible spaces where people can come together to strengthen community activity through placemaking, community engagement, social finance, and social enterprise. Food is a connective thread across this work and many core activities that flow through 10C focus on building sustainable and inclusive local food systems. Among many notable food focused projects that 10C is involved in, is food uniting neighbours.
About food uniting neighbours
food uniting neighbours (f.u.n.) is a grassroots co-design collective, led by Community Advisors in Guelph and Wellington County, along with 10C staff, researchers at the University of Guelph and many project and community partners. f.u.n. focuses on locally-driven action on food and community issues, helping improve food access, food literacy, community connection and wellbeing, as well as build the community’s capacity to organize and engage in community development and food-based activities. The project supports community members with information about food access and other community services, and offers weekly and seasonal programs, learning opportunities and special events all based around food and community The project reaches a wide range of participants, many of whom are new to Canada and/or from low-income households.

The space was reset to be mostly in-ground growing with some raised beds. Some of the growing space continues to be offered as community garden plots for individuals, households and community groups. The rest of the space was turned into a more communal style growing space for the community to tend to and reap from. As such, we renamed the garden to reflect the new model while also telling its story: f.u.n. Commons Westmount Garden: Where food from home = food for home
Coordinating the garden has been made possible in part because of our partnerships with St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic High School, and The SEED in 2026. Lourdes High School granted us access to water and some of their students supported with starting, maintaining and planting seedlings. St. Joseph’s granted us permission to use the land for growing, teaching and celebration. They have also been active in researching the current conditions of the space and with plans for what it could look like in the future. The SEED has partnered with us with staffing to coordinate onsite activities for the 2026 season.
