Guelph, Ont., August 13, 2026 – One month after achieving the first major milestone in Phase 1 of the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program (DTIRP), the second milestone is set to be achieved on schedule.
By Sunday, August 16, the intersection of Macdonell and Wyndham Street will reopen, marking the second milestone of DTIRP complete. This closure began on July 19 and was expected to take approximately one month. To help accelerate this section of the project, Steed and Evans carried out overnight work in the area and successfully completed the construction on schedule.
Reaching this second milestone also on schedule highlights the strong momentum of the construction work and reflects the City’s and contractor’s shared commitment to minimizing impacts wherever possible, especially ahead of back-to-school season.
“Students are a vital part of our Downtown community and are among the many people who rely on transit to travel through the area,” said Kyle Gibson, acting general manager for transportation and engineering services. “Reopening this route now will improve mobility, reduce disruptions, and help create a smoother experience for residents, students, businesses, visitors, and all transit users travelling in and out of our Downtown core, helping to support local businesses as activity picks up this fall.”
The next milestone for Downtown construction is set for the end of this year.
What’s next for the project
Starting just after Labour Day weekend in September:
- Construction will progress north along Wyndham Street, from the Quebec Street/Douglas Street intersection to Woolwich Street.
- During this phase, St. George’s Square will be closed to all traffic, and both Quebec and Douglas Streets will become temporary dead-ends.
- To support traffic flow, Douglas Street will be converted for two-way traffic. In order to accommodate this change, on-street parking will need to be removed during this time.
