Guelph’s tap water

Tap water facts

  • Guelph’s tap water is safe, healthy and naturally filtered. It is treated with ultraviolet disinfection and chlorine to keep it bacteria-free as it moves through the pipes to your home.
  • Our tap water is hard because it comes from the ground. Well, it’s not actually hard (unless you freeze it!), but it contains lots of dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium.
  • Hard water minerals can be good for your health, but might impact your appliances and how your hair and skin feel. Water softeners and water conditioners are devices that can change the effects of hard water.
  • Guelph residents use about 164 litres of water per person each day. Our goal is to work as a community to bring our average use down to 150 litres per day by changing our behaviour and upgrading to water-saving appliances. If each Guelph resident shortened their current shower time by just two minutes, we’d surpass our reduction goal!
