Guelph, Ont., September 30, 2026 – As part of its commemoration of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the City has released its 2026 Indigenous Relations Framework progress report. The report highlights the City’s ongoing efforts to advance reconciliation and strengthen relationships with Indigenous Peoples and communities.
The Indigenous Relations Framework formalizes the City’s commitment to reconciliation by embedding Indigenous perspectives into how it serves the community. Through intentional actions and decision-making, the report demonstrates how reconciliation is being integrated across City operations through policy development, organizational learning and support for Indigenous-led initiatives.
Over the past year, the City has:
- Strengthened relationships with area First Nations by embedding early Indigenous engagement into planning and policy decisions.
- Expanded learning opportunities for staff and Council to support more informed and culturally responsive decision-making.
- Invested $50,000 through City-supported grant programs to support Indigenous-led projects and community priorities.
- Continued the six-year partnership between Guelph Museums and the Decolonizing Place Narrative Research Collective, advancing understanding of local histories and stories of place through Indigenous ways of knowing.
“Reconciliation is not a single action or milestone. It is an ongoing commitment that must be reflected in how we listen, learn, build relationships and make decisions,” said Tara Baker, City chief administrative officer. “This report highlights the progress we’ve made over the past year and reinforces our commitment to working alongside Indigenous communities to create meaningful and lasting change.”
Released annually, the Indigenous Relations Framework Progress Report supports the City’s Future Guelph strategic plan initiative of advancing reconciliation. On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the City invites community members to explore the report and learn more about the commitments and actions outlined in the Indigenous Relations Framework.
