New Central Library transition plan approved as Baker District project continues

Current Main Library set to close February 1, 2027

Guelph, Ont., Tuesday, September 29 – The Guelph Public Library Board has approved the Library’s transition strategy for moving from the current Main Library, located at 100 Norfolk Street, to the new Central Library at 1 Baker Street.

The current Main Library will close to the public on February 1, 2027, allowing staff to begin an intensive transition period. The new Central Library is targeted to open in April 2027, with the goal that the new space is ready in time to celebrate Guelph’s bicentennial anniversary.

“Our focus is on creating a smooth transition for our patrons and staff while preparing an exceptional opening experience for the community,” says Dan Atkins, CEO of the Guelph Public Library. “The months between the closure of the current Main Library and the opening of the new Central Library will be dedicated to moving collections, setting up technology, training staff, and ensuring every aspect of the building is ready to welcome the public.”

Library branches provide continuity for programs, services, and collections

Although the Main Library will be closed during the transition period, patrons will continue to have access to Library programs, services, collections, and warming at branch locations and the Bookmobile.

Parts of the Main Library’s collection have been carefully moved around the system so patrons can continue to request and pick up holds in person or using their online account. Access to the archives and local history collections may be limited during the move. Further information about impacted services, collections, and programs will be shared closer to the Library’s closing date.

What’s coming next for Baker District

As the anchor of the Baker District redevelopment, the new Central Library’s opening will be a defining moment for the district, helping to establish a vibrant mixed-use community hub and supporting future development in the area. It’s an important milestone in the evolution of the Baker District and helps to set the stage for bringing this vision to life.

The City is excited for the next phase, with construction of the residential towers anticipated to begin as early as next year.

“With the Central Library opening on the horizon, we’re excited to see the momentum of the Baker District carry forward into the next chapter of the redevelopment” says Tara Baker, chief administrative officer for the City of Guelph. “The progress we’re seeing in the Baker District is an investment in the future of Downtown Guelph. Together with ongoing Downtown infrastructure revitalization, it represents the kind of city-building that supports economic growth, attracts investment, and creates a vibrant public realm that serves residents, businesses and visitors alike.”

To support efficient construction of the towers, final completion of the two public squares will occur later in the project timeline, as temporary access through portions of the squares’ perimeters are required during tower construction:

  • Library Square is currently being built and is expected to be functional in 2027, with some of the finishing elements aligning with the completion of the towers (these include decorative planters, benches and tiered seating, some stairs and ramps and pedestrian pathways from the square to the towers).
  • Wyndham Square will be constructed after completion of the tower developments, and together with the finishing elements for Library Square, are expected to be completed and fully functional upon tower completion in 2030.

This next stage will further transform and connect the area, expand housing opportunities, and support continued growth in Downtown Guelph.
