Guelph, Ont., September 28, 2026 – City staff worked closely with our colleagues at Guelph Police Services and the University of Guelph in advance to prepare for Homecoming. This past weekend saw an unacceptable level of disruption, unsafe behaviour and incidents, exceeding what we have experienced in previous years. We value the positive contributions of university students, but this behaviour has no place in our community.
“To our teams in Paramedic Services, Fire Services, Public Works and Bylaw: thank you,” said Tara Baker, Chief Administrative Officer. “During an exceptionally challenging weekend, you showed professionalism, resilience and dedication while responding to calls and keeping our community safe. This was a true team effort, supported by close coordination with our community partners, and we are grateful for each of your contributions.”
The City was prepared and ready to respond to all emergency needs throughout the entire City during Homecoming. As part of our response model with a large event happening within the community, we partner with emergency services outside of Guelph to ensure we are able to respond to other emergencies throughout the whole City.
“I am encouraged by Guelph Police using every available tool and opportunity to find those responsible for putting our citizens, businesses, and emergency personnel in danger,” said Mayor Cam Guthrie. “I am also encouraged by the University of Guelph which has pledged to take swift action where individuals are found to have violated University policies under the student code of conduct and discipline strongly.”
Together with our community partners, we will review this weekend’s events and identify opportunities to strengthen our approach to future large-scale events.
