Notice Date: September 1, 2026
What’s happening:
Starting September 28, the City of Guelph is replacing the Speed River Bridge and will be closing Speedvale Avenue East at the bridge, with no eastbound or westbound through traffic permitted through the construction zone.
This work is part of Phase 2 of the multi-year Speedvale Avenue corridor improvement. During Phase 2, we are reconstructing Speedvale Avenue East, from east of the Guelph Junction Railway tracks to Riverview Drive. This includes upgrading the underground sewer and water pipes, replacing the bridge, adding multi-use paths, re-aligning the Speed River Trail and adding a trail underpass for future connections.
Why:
These improvements will support Guelph’s growing population and make it easier for you to travel alongSpeedvale Avenue East by walking, cycling, driving or taking transit.
When:
The Speed River Bridge will be closed starting on September 28, for four weeks (weather permitting). We began Phase 2 construction in February 2026 and anticipate all Phase 2 construction will be completed by Spring 2028.
