Pottery programs and events

The City of Guelph has been offering classes, workshops and open studio for more than 20 years. The Guelph Community Pottery Centre studio, located at 14 Edinburgh Road South, is equipped with 10 electric pottery wheels, two kilns, and all the essentials for creating pottery.

Open Studio

Wheels, handbuilding tables and a great selection of glazes are offered during Open Studio. City of Guelph pottery staff are available to assist participants in studio procedures but will not provide instruction. No registration necessary. Only 12 spaces available each week, so come early! For experienced potters only. Additional fees for materials. Buy a 10 hour pass at a discounted rate.

Age: 18+ years
Fee: $6 per hour or $50 for a 10 hour pass, plus clay and firing fees.

Open Studio is cancelled December 24, December 28, December 31, and March 17.

Participants are expected to follow studio procedures.

12 spots available at a time; first come, first serve.

  • Tuesdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. (program cancelled during July and August)
  • Saturdays, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Private rentals

Come celebrate with us! Create a special outing for your group at the Guelph Pottery Centre. Whatever your function, we will work with you to customize a successful pottery workshop. Past private rentals have included:

  • Corporate team building
  • Children’s birthday parties
  • School trips
  • Wedding parties

All private rentals:

  • Are 90 minutes in length
  • Can include 8-12 participants for handbuilding or 8-10 participants for pottery on the wheel
  • Include an instructor

The City of Guelph hosts pottery sales twice per year. Join us at one of our Pottery Sales featuring local potters. Choose from a variety of beautifully handcrafted and functional pottery at great prices. Cash, debit and credit card accepted.

Pottery Family Night (4+ years)

Get creative with your family and have fun together in our Pottery Studio! Learn some basic techniques in hand-building forms and try the wheel together. All family members will have the chance to participate and create projects. One adult must register with child(ren) up to age 12.

Clay Creations (parent and child) (4 to 12 years)

No matter your level of experience, these two classes will be fun for both parent and child. This not meant for parents to help their child create something. Rather, it is a time to be together, each learning how to create in clay. We will make creations using handbuilding techniques including pinch pots, slab and coil building. Expect to bring home lots of treasures times two!

Kids ‘N’ Clay Adventures (7 to 12 years)

In this action-packed class, your adventurous young potter will construct coil pots, build pinch pots, and conquer the potter’s wheel. Participants will conclude their adventures with a final day of glazing, and return to claim their project after it has been fired.

Teen Pottery (13 to 18 years)

Learn to throw on a potter’s wheel and have fun with exciting handbuilding techniques. Use these techniques to create mugs, bowls and a wide variety of objects. Exercise your imagination and practice your new skills to create meaningful objects and master the potter’s wheel.

Pottery for Beginners (18+ years)

Learn to manipulate clay as you master the basics of wheel work, hand building, and glazing. Let your creativity flow with simple projects as you discover the potential of clay.

Pottery on the Wheel (18+ years)

Learn to work with clay, pottery tools and equipment through various handbuilding and wheel thrown projects. Participants will work at their own pace with instruction and guidance to help create decorative and useful objects. This class is for all levels of ability.

Pottery Wheel and Handbuilding (18+ years)

Learn to work with clay, pottery tools and equipment through various handbuilding and wheel thrown projects. Participants will work at their own pace with instruction and guidance to help create decorative and useful objects. This class is for all levels of ability.

Pottery Workshop for Seniors (18+ years)

Get yourself familiar with clay, the potter’s wheel and glazing through various handbuilding and wheel thrown projects. You will work at your own pace with instruction and guidance to help create decorative and useful objects. This class is for all levels and ability.
