Bike park

Bike parks are growing in popularity as a place to grow and learn new skills. We’ve selected Eastview Park as the ideal place for a bike park.

A concept design was developed in 2019 and includes:

  • Asphalt pump track (phase 1)
  • Jump lines (phase 2)
  • Technical trail and supplementary trail (phase 3)

The asphalt pump track (phase 1) is planned for construction in 2024. Construction of future phases has not been scheduled at this time.

Proposed bicycle skills facility at Eastview Park

Draft bike park concept

What is a bike park and pump track?

A bike park is a purpose-built facility for bicycles of all types (BMX, mountain, dirt jump, recumbent). They are designed to give riders of all ages and skill levels the ability to get outdoors and safely improve their bike riding skills. A bike park may include pump tracks, progressive jumps, skills courses trails and other features.

A pump track is looped track with berms, rollers and turns—it’s designed for riders to use their body to ‘pump’ and move with little pedaling. Our pump track is for all ages and skill levels. It provides a safe space to practice skills, get exercise and meet other people in our community.

Background

Committee of the Whole – November 2017

Read the Bicycle Skills Facility Report

We presented our findings at a Committee of the Whole in November 2017, with recommendations to:

  • Start community engagement
  • Select Eastview Park as the preferred location
  • Revise the Eastview Park Master Plan to include a bicycle skills facility

Phase 1 engagement – July 2018

We engaged with you between July 27-August 13, 2018. Community feedback was presented to Council as an Information Report on March 15, 2019.

Accessibility Advisory Committee – October 2021

We engaged with the Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) on the proposed design plan and prepare for final design development. The AAC provided the following feedback shown in the meeting minutes. The project time will take into consideration feedback in the design development.

Working Group – 2021-2022

In 2021 and 2022, we engaged with the public and a dedicated bike park working group in three meetings made up of Guelph community members to help refine the concept plan and prepare for final design development.

Project Status

In December 2022, the Environmental Impact Study for the proposed works was completed. This included review by Environmental Planning staff and the Grand River Conservation Authority. The report concludes that no GRCA permit is required to initiate the planned Phase 1 Pump Track scope of work.

Phase 1 of the design is being pursued at this time. Parks staff have retained a consultant specialized in bike park design and construction contract administration. This consultant will be working hand-in-hand with the City Project Manager on this file to retain a contractor, oversee construction and train City staff on maintenance of the facility.

Construction of Phase 1 is currently planned for 2024.
