The McCrae Park Gates, each featuring a hand holding a torch, were installed as part of the heritage gardens in 1946. Guarding the entrance, these gates contrast the the delicate nature of the gardens with their appearance and intricate design, and were crafted by Les Smith, a local blacksmith. The heritage gardens  were created as a memorial to John McCrae by the Colonel John McCrae Memorial Branch (Branch 257) of the Canadian Legion of Guelph.
