Verney water tower maintenance

About the project

The City is undertaking planned maintenance work at the Verney water tower including removing the existing coating of paints, repainting the interior and exterior of the tank, upgrading the tower safety systems, and installing new pipes and valves.

The City’s water towers are a critical part of our water distribution system, and must be repainted every 25 years to ensure that they are safe and reliable.

The work is being completed by BGL Contractors Corp.

Construction schedule

Construction will take place from early May until October 2018, weather permitting.

Construction and noise impacts

Some stages of this work will be more disruptive than others – specifically the noise generated during sandblasting on the interior and exterior of the tank to remove the existing paint and prepare the surface for new paint coatings.  Sandblasting activities will take place from now through to the end of September. Sandblasting and painting of the tower must be done while temperatures remain above freezing.  This includes the need to control humidity on a continuous basis which requires operation of generators at the base of the tower. To ensure timely completion of this project, the contractor will need to work some Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., consistent with the City’s noise bylaw.

Before the start of painting, the tower will be completely enclosed with scaffolding and tarps that provide 100 per cent containment. The enclosure, along with negative ventilation inside the enclosure, will prevent emissions.

Traffic impacts

There are no closures or lane reductions on adjacent roadways. It is anticipated that there will be increased construction vehicle traffic to the site.  Smaller staff vehicles will use the Verney Street entrance at 36 Verney Street to access the site.  Larger construction vehicles, including materials deliveries, will access the site via the construction site access on Exhibition Street between Verney Street and Division Street.
