Traffic Signal Assistant – Summer 2021

Job summary

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Traffic Engineering, the successful candidate will perform and assist in tasks related to traffic signal design within the City of Guelph. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City’s Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Vision for an inclusive, connected and prosperous city.


  • Update existing or create new legal traffic signal design drawings (PHM-125) using AutoCAD software.
  • Visit traffic signal installations in the field to verify locations.
  • Update traffic signal GIS layers and asset management records.
  • Save drawings into City’s electronic record system.
  • Perform other duties as required.


  • Graduate or currently enrolled in an Engineering Civil, Environmental and Geological Engineering program or equivalent.
  • Previous experience related to “Transportation Engineering Technology” would be an asset.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge in traffic engineering theory and practice, Ontario Traffic Manual, and Highway Traffic Act.
  • Knowledge in Microsoft Office and traffic related software applications.
  • Strong AutoCAD experience is required.
  • Must demonstrate ability to effectively work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate ability to effectively work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess a valid ‘G’ driver’s license.

Important Note

  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm they have a valid driver’s licence held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.


$17.22 to $21.96 per hour depending on education level and work experience.

Hours of work

35 hours per week, Monday to Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. Approximately 4 months beginning in April/May.
