Equipment Operator(temporary for up to 6 months)

Job summary

Resumes are being accepted for the temporary position of Equipment Operator within the Solid Waste Resources Division.  Reporting to the Supervisor, Process Operations the successful candidate will operate equipment in the Transfer Station and Material Recovery Facility.  Guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision – an inclusive, connected, prosperous city where we look after each other and our environment.


  • Operates industrial vehicles/equipment equipped with lifting devices to push, pull, stack, or move products, equipment or materials.
  • Operates equipment in receiving area to push materials onto feed conveyors, to place processable wastes or large recyclables into roll-off bins and storage areas.
  • Operates equipment to move and load bales onto transport, skids and containers, and to push recovered materials under sorting stations to baler feed conveyor.
  • Lubricates equipment, recharges batteries and refuels.
  • Ensures all safety and operational procedures are followed.
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness of tipping floor and product storage areas.
  • Perform heavy lifting and capable of hand shovelling heavy materials from equipment pits
  • Operating the transfer station to manage materials, separate recyclables, direct truck traffic, perform housekeeping.
  • Load outbound trailers using a compactor and front end loader.
  • Operate equipment such as forklifts, skid steers, genie booms, backhoes, front end loaders as required.
  • Ensures all safety and operational procedures are followed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of Transfer Station, perform daily housekeeping tasks.
  • Perform heavy lifting and capable of hand shovelling heavy materials from equipment pits and around doorways.
  • Other related duties as assigned, including inter-changing job functions.


  • Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of a Grade 12 Diploma and 1-2 years experience operating front end loaders, skid steers and forklifts in a manufacturing, warehouse or construction setting. Candidates with equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A valid Class G drivers licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Able to perform physical requirements of position (e.g. lifting, walking, bending and pulling).
  • A team player with good communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • A mechanical ability to maintain and operate a variety of equipment and small hand tools.
  • Neat in appearance and have the ability to deal with the public in a cordial manner.
  • Ability to work alone and with minimum supervision.


$26.85 per hour
