Community Stewardship Coordinator – part time

Job summary

Resumes are being accepted for the part time position of Community Stewardship Coordinator with the Parks Operation and Forestry department.  Reporting to the Program Manager of Trails and Natural Areas Stewardship, this position will focus on engaging the community on public lands including trails, natural areas stewardship, and community gardening.

The position will engage community groups and volunteers to deliver outreach and stewardship initiatives in support of the Urban Forestry Management Plan, Trails Master Plan, and Natural Heritage Action Plan and manage the community gardens program.

  • Assist in developing and implementing the Parks Operations and Forestry community stewardship program.
  • Attract and retain volunteers for stewardship activities.
  • Liaise with and support neighbourhood groups, outside agencies and service partners in the delivery of community stewardship programming including supporting and recognizing volunteers and securing grants and sponsors.
  • Support Guelph’s status as a Bee City
  • Liaise, coordinate and secure the support other City staff to provide resources and expertise to Community Stewardship programs.
  • Support the organization of community events with environmental themes geared for volunteer participation (e.g., tree plantings, boardwalk building, and community cleanups).
  • Facilitate public participation in the maintenance and enhancement of the urban forest and trails
  • Implement all aspects of the Community Gardens program
  • Assess interest in community stewardship consistent with the City’s Community Engagement Framework
  • Compile statistics and prepare evaluation of the community stewardship and community gardens program annually
  • Maintain the Community Garden Policy and complete annual report to Council
  • Provide leadership to the Community Gardens Working Group which may include chairing the meetings
  • Promote community stewardship and community gardens including updating the website
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


  • Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of a degree or diploma in Environmental studies, Community Outreach and Development, Leisure studies or a related field and 2-3 years community work experience working with volunteers, voluntary committees, government, non profit and community sectors. Candidates with an equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Effective communications skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders and the general public.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, complete multiple task assignments and function effectively in a high-volume workplace with time restraints.
  • Ability to deal effectively with contentious situations and to exercise discretion, judgment, diplomacy and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with and support Parks Operations and Forestry, staff, agencies and the community to achieve superior results and promote the service first philosophy of the City.
  • Excellent leadership and facilitation skills.


$19.41 per hour
