2020 Summer – Parks and Forestry Labourers

The City of Guelph is looking for hardworking, motivated team players to work in various departments during the summer months. The City of Guelph is now accepting applications from candidates who are interested in performing general labour in following areas of the Parks Operations & Forestry department:

  • Sports Fields Maintenance
  • Horticulture
  • Park Infrastructure
  • Urban Forestry

  • Amusement Rides/Playground/Splash Pads

These positions assist with providing services and maintenance related to hundreds of hectares of parkland and the related amenities that make Guelph such a great place!

 

Rate of pay: $14.07 per hour for first work term

General Information about our Parks & Forestry Labourer

  • Most begin in April and finish at the end of August/beginning of September. However, there are a few positions that continue until the end of October
  • Positions will work up to 40 hours per week. Some positions include evenings and weekends or may have regularly scheduled shifts outside the standard hours; some positions start later.

General Qualifications

  • Valid G or G2 Driver’s license and a minimum of 2 years driving experience for positions that are required to drive a City vehicle.  Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm they have a valid driver’s license held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years.  The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
  • Valid CPR and First Aid is required prior to start date.
  • Ability to work with various small tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform physical work and in all types of weather.
  • Ability to work with or without supervision.
  • Strong team skills and have a focus on quality customer service.
  • Demonstrated community mindedness through volunteering, community outreach and other initiatives is an asset.

Position Descriptions and Job Specific Qualifications

Turf Maintenance Labourer

Duties

  • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to, turf maintenance within the City’s parks and open spaces, including working within the road allowance.
  • Safe & efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment and vehicles, i.e.  grass cutting machines, trimmers, blowers, trucks, and small equipment including all auxiliary attachments
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
  • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act and policies/procedures of the Corporation.
  • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. 
  • Assist other members of the Parks & Forestry team during vacation/sickness and other peak workload periods.

Specific Qualifications

  • 6-9 months of turf related experience demonstrating basic knowledge in Turf Maintenance and the ability to operate grass-cutting equipment.
  • Experience in parks or landscape maintenance is considered an asset.

Sports Field Maintenance Labourer

Duties

 

  • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to sports field maintenance within the City’s parks and open spaces.
  • Familiarization with all official dimensions of playing surfaces; baseball diamonds, soccer pitches, football fields etc. as well as lining procedures and proper grooming procedures and requirements for safe playable surfaces.
  • Install, maintain and remove tennis nets, monitor and clean tennis surfaces as required.
  • Awareness and fulfillment of tournament requirements and needs. Carry out assigned tasks with minimal interference with play.
  • Ensure all surfaces are safe for daily use, and inform crew lead of unsafe conditions
  • Proper installation and maintenance of home plates, pitching points.
  • Daily cleaning of all areas; player’s benches, backstops, under bleachers etc.
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections, reporting defects to immediate supervisor.
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
  • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act and policies/procedures of the Corporation.
  • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. 
  • Assist other members of the Parks & Forestry team during vacation/sickness and other peak workload periods.
  • 6-9 months of turf related experience demonstrating basic knowledge in Sports Field Maintenance and the ability to operate a tractor with appropriate attachments is an asset.
  • Previous experience playing or coaching team sports is considered an asset.

Horticulture Labourer

Duties

  • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to the care and culture of plants, shrubs, and small trees within the City’s parks and other City-owned property, including working within road allowances.
  • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles (i.e. trucks, water trailer, pruning saws, pruning pole, hand tools)
  • Required to weed, water, prune, dead head, plant, woodchip and maintain beds on a scheduled basis, assist with tree and shrub maintenance, litter pick and report any hazards.
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
  • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act and policies/procedures of the Corporation.
  • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. 
  • Assist other members of the Parks & Forestry team during vacation/sickness and other peak workload periods.

Specific Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in horticulture, arboriculture and/or landscaping is preferred.
  • Experience in horticulture, landscaping, landscape design, urban arboriculture, greenhouse, or other related experience is an asset.

 

Parks Infrastructure Labourer

Duties

  • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to the installation, maintenance and repair of furniture, park buildings, fencing, park signs, interlock repair, painting, assisting with special events, graffiti removal, etc. within the City’s parks and  other City-owned property, including working within road allowances.
  • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles (i.e. trucks, trailers, power tools, hand tools)
  • Required to perform or assist with all aspect of maintenance and repair on park infrastructure, litter pick and report any hazards.
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
  • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act and policies/procedures of the Corporation.
  • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. 
  • Assist other members of the Parks & Forestry team during vacation/sickness and other peak workload periods.

Specific Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in construction, carpentry and/or building maintenance is preferred.
  • Experience in construction, landscaping (fencing, interlock, cement, and masonry), carpentry, plumbing, professional painting, graffiti removal or other related experience is an asset.

 

Urban Forestry Labourer

Duties

  • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to, the care and culture of trees on City owned property. 
  • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment, tablets, and vehicles (i.e. water trailer, pruning saws, pruning pole, etc.)
  • Required to inventory, water, prune, remove, and plant and maintain trees on schedule basis.
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
  • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act and policies/procedures of the Corporation.
  • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. 
  • Assist other members of the Parks & Forestry team during vacation/sickness and other peak workload periods.

Specific Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in arboriculture or forestry is preferred.
  • Experience in landscaping, farming, tree planting or other related experience is an asset.

 

Parks Sanitation Labourer

Duties

  • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to, maintaining the cleanliness of Guelph’s parks and washrooms
  • Safe and efficient operation, care, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles. For example: one-ton garbage truck, power washer, pick-up trucks, grass cutting machines, tractors, cleaning equipment and small tools.
  • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment, tablets, and vehicles
  • Emptying, cleaning and replacing liners of trash/waste receptacles
  • Cleaning, dusting and disinfecting all washroom fixtures
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
  • Garbage pickup in parks, and litter picking  
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
  • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act and policies/procedures of the Corporation.
  • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. 
  • Assist other members of the Parks & Forestry team during vacation/sickness and other peak workload periods.

Specific Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in parks or environmental field is preferred.
  • Previous cleaning experience is considered an asset.

 

Trails and Natural Area Stewardship Labourer

Duties

  • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to, the maintenance and care of trails and natural areas on City owned property. 
  • Safe and efficient operation, care, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles. For example: grass cutting machines, tractors, water tanks, chippers, and small equipment, including all auxiliary attachments, pick-up trucks, trailer, rototiller, shovels, rakes, string trimmer, pole saw, sweeper, ATV, one-ton garbage truck, power washer, weed wrenches
  • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment, tablets, and vehicles (i.e. water trailer, pruning saws, pruning pole) required inventorying trails, and pruning.
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers 
  • Garbage pickup in parks, and litter picking  
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
  • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act and policies/procedures of the Corporation.
  • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. 
  • Assist other members of the Parks & Forestry team during vacation/sickness and other peak workload periods.

Specific Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in parks, forestry or environmental field is preferred.
  • Tree and shrub identification skills are an asset.
  • Experience in landscaping, farming, tree planting or other related experience is an asset.

 

Parks Amusement-Playground-Splash pad Labourer

Duties

  • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to, the maintenance of playgrounds, splash pads, and the skate park, operation of our seasonal amusements (carousel and miniature train) at Riverside Park, assisting with special events, graffiti removal, etc. within the City’s parks and other City-owned property, including working within road allowances.
  • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles (i.e. trucks, trailers, power tools, hand tools)
  • Required to perform or assist with all aspect of maintenance and repair on park infrastructure, litter pick and report any hazards.
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
  • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act and policies/procedures of the Corporation.
  • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member.

Specific Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in recreation, customer and/or team management, or child development is preferred.
  • Experience in operating amusements, landscape maintenance, working with or around children, professional painting, graffiti removal, organizing large events or other related experience is an asset.
