Mayor's Christmas Tree lighting
All are welcome to join in the celebration as Mayor Cam Guthrie lights the Market Square Christmas Tree (Tree lighting countdown at 7:45 p.m.)!

Enjoy live entertainment featuring The Heavyweights Brass Band, a holiday sing-along, and complimentary cocoa and cider as we kick off the festive season.

Donations will be collected in support of Toasty Toes Guelph, a campaign to collect new, warm socks for those experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of experiencing homelessness in our city.

About Toasty Toes Guelph

Toasty Toes was started in Waterloo Region in 2013 by Sharon Gilroy-Dreher. 2018 marks the first Toasty Toes Guelph (@toastytoes_Gue) campaign, led by Allison Mitchell. This initiative collects and distributes new, warm socks to those experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness in local communities.

The campaign kicked off on World Homeless Day, October 10, and runs until November 10, 2018, with socks being distributed in November and December. The Mayor’s Tree Lighting is a special addition to this year’s campaign.

Q: Why socks?
A: Socks are an important clothing item, and wet, torn or worn out socks can lead to a multitude of health issues.

Q: What kind of socks are you collecting?
A: New, warm socks for adults and children (no dress socks, please).

Q: Should I wrap or package the socks I am bringing?
A: Please keep socks in the packaging they came in. No other wrapping or packaging is required.

Q: Where do the socks go?
A: So far, the following organizations will be receiving socks from the campaign:

  • Lakeside HOPE House
  • Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis
  • Chalmers Centre
  • Wyndham House
  • Dunara Homes for Recovery Inc.
  • Michael House
  • West Willow Village
