Guelph, Ont., December 10, 2019 – It’s an exciting time at Guelph Transit. The public transit department is getting ready to introduce a reloadable tap and go card—making paying fares on buses faster, easier and more secure.
Starting January 17, 2020, the new OnYourWay fare card—equipped with tap-and-go technology—can be purchased at select retailers and City facilities (e.g. ServiceGuelph in City Hall, recreation facilities, and Guelph Transit). Affordable Bus Pass customers will continue to buy their bus pass at a City facility. Authorized retailers, Guelph Public Library branches (beginning February 21) and the Guelph Museum (beginning February 21) only sell Adult fare cards. However, Adult and Reduced fare cards can be reloaded at any City facility or select retailer.
Customers can add funds to their card online or in person, get balance protection once the card is registered to ensure the money is safe if the card is ever lost or stolen, and manage the card (e.g. check balance and history) through an online portal at guelphtransit.ca.
To welcome the new fare card, the $5 card fee will be waived for the first three months for all transit customers. However, this fee will be applied to all new cards after May 1. Affordable Bus Pass customers will only pay the fee if their registered card is lost or stolen and needs to be replaced.
“With the OnYourWay fare card, customers can load, tap and go—getting on their way faster,” says Courtney McDonald, manager, Business Services at Guelph Transit, adding, “We encourage transit riders to get the card when it becomes available to enjoy its many benefits and to take advantage of the waived card fee promotion.”
The OnYourWay fare card replaces the need for paper tickets, monthly passes and cash, although cash payment will still be an option. Customers can load daily and monthly passes, or maintain a stored dollar amount on the fare card for single rides. When a pass is added to the card, unlimited trips can be made for as long as the pass is valid. For stored dollar amount, each time the card is tapped on the fare box, the system deducts Guelph Transit’s fare from the balance on the card.
Monthly passes and tickets to be phased out
Traditional monthly bus passes will no longer be sold as of March 18, 2020. Instead, the monthly fare can be loaded onto an OnYourWay card.
As of March 31, 2020 paper tickets will also be discontinued. Transit customers can still use existing tickets until May 31, 2020. After this date, customers need to visit a City facility to have the value of any leftover tickets added to an OnYourWay card.
The $5 card fee will apply as of May 1, 2020. Transit users are welcome to exchange tickets during the waived card fee promotion, January 17 to April 30, 2020.
In response to customer feedback, Guelph Transit is working with non-profit organizations on a new single-fare bus ticket process that enables service providers to continue to hand out tickets to people in need in the community. These special tickets will be honoured as valid fare on Guelph Transit buses.
Guelph Transit is also working to enable the Connect-to-GO flag on the OnYourWay fare card. GO Transit riders with an OnYourWay fare card should continue to show the bus operator their Metrolinx Presto card or valid GO Transit ticket and deposit 60 cents into the fare box. “We’ll let our customers know this feature is ready once Guelph Transit validators are installed at GO Transit stations,” says McDonald.
Guelph Transit is installing new fare boxes on all its buses, which will accept the new fare card. As they are installed over the coming weeks, transit customers will begin to see the new box as they board the bus. Until the new cards are available, riders can scan their bus pass on the new fare box. For now, University of Guelph students will continue to show the bus operator their U-pass to board the bus.
The fare box project, including the OnYourWay card, is a Council-approved recommendation of the Guelph Transit Business Service Review. In 2017, the federal government announced $1.3 million in funding for Guelph through the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund to replace fare boxes on City buses to improve efficiency, reduce potential fraud and missed fares, and automate validation of student passes (U-pass) and transfers. The City is providing the remaining project funds of $1.3 million from its Infrastructure Renewal Reserve Fund.
“This exciting transit project supports the City’s Strategic Plan by improving local transportation and regional transit connectivity, as well as embedding smart, clean technology in our infrastructure to reduce our carbon footprint,” says Robin Gerus, general manager, Guelph Transit.
