Guelph, Ont., June 6, 2019 – The City of Guelph is updating its Parks and Recreation Master Plan to guide how it plans for the future development of recreational services and infrastructure in Guelph.
“This is an exciting opportunity for residents to help us dive deeper into the themes and strategic directions of the Community Plan that relate to parks and recreation programming in our community,” says Heather Flaherty, general manager of Parks and Recreation.
She adds, “The updated master plan will be a shared vision and strategy for how the City’s parks and recreation programs, services, and facilities should grow to meet current and future needs of the community.”
Over the next several months, the community will have opportunities to participate in the project, including the upcoming open houses on Thursday, June 20 and taking the online survey that closes July 4.
“These are your parks. Your recreational opportunities. And we want to hear from everyone. Tell us how you use Guelph’s parks, recreation programs/services and facilities, and how we can make them even better,” says Flaherty. All opportunities to provide input will be posted at guelph.ca/haveyoursay.
Staff will present a master plan for Council’s consideration in early fall 2020.
The last Guelph Recreation, Parks and Culture Strategic Plan was completed in 2009 and continues to serve as a guiding document for day-to-day operations, with many of the recommendations informing the City’s Official Plan.
Over the last 10 years, the City has completed multiple projects and initiatives that enhance the value of parks and recreation in Guelph, including:
- Youth Strategy
- Older Adult Strategy
- Emerald Ash Borer
- Parkland Dedication Bylaw
- Silvercreek Skatepark construction
- Urban Forest Management Plan
