Please be advised of the following smoke alarm requirements applicable to accessory apartment permit applications submitted after March 29, 2019.
Interconnected smoke alarms are required to be installed throughout the accessory apartment and host dwelling unit in accordance with the Building Code.
Smoke alarms are required on all floor levels, in all bedrooms throughout the entire house and in the hallway(s) outside of bedrooms. All smoke alarms are required to be interconnected. Existing smoke alarms are acceptable provided they are compatible with the new alarms and can be interconnected. All smoke alarms shall have a strobe light signaling component.
In keeping with previous versions of the Building Code, the City of Guelph, Building Services, previously permitted only one smoke alarm per floor level in the host dwelling portion of the house. However, recently received information indicates that additional smoke alarms are required.
In order to apply the less restrictive renovation requirements of the Building Code – found in Part 11 – pertaining to fire separations and exiting for accessory apartments, interconnected smoke alarms are required to be installed throughout the accessory apartment and host dwelling unit in accordance with the Building Code.
The requirements for smoke alarms can be found in Division B, Subsection 9.10.19. of the Building Code.
