Award to be presented March 28 in Collingwood
Guelph, Ont., February 7, 2019 – The City of Guelph’s Limitless Guelph program is receiving a 2019 PRO Award of Excellence from Parks and Recreation Ontario (PRO).
The Access and Equity award, given out to a community with a population of more than 30,000, will be presented on March 28 at the 2019 PRO Educational Forum and Trade Show in Collingwood.
This PRO award recognizes individuals and organizations that have worked to advance parks and recreation services for everyone in the community.
“We’re extremely pleased to be recognized for the inclusive atmosphere that our team has created for sport and recreation activities in Guelph. This award is a testament to our employees’ collaboration and dedication to introduce opportunities for children and youth—living with and without a disability—in our community,” says Heather Flaherty, general manager of Parks and Recreation.
Since 2016, the Limitless Guelph program has provided free, accessible and inclusive adaptive sports and recreation opportunities, including wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, sledge hockey, goal ball and seated volleyball, to more than 1,800 children and youth in Guelph. The program uses a reverse integration approach to sport—engaging both children and youth living with and without a disability—and provides educational workshops at all program sessions as a way to reduce stigma and misconceptions about adapted sports, enhance fundamental movement skill sets, and increase confidence and social inclusion for all participants.
“We hope that recognition from PRO will encourage other communities to take similar steps into the world of adaptive sports—helping to build broader awareness of, and greater support for, underserved children and youth,” says Flaherty.
