Art installation planned for Market Square starting February 8

Guelph, Ont. February 5, 2019 – Hillside Festival and the Downtown Guelph Business Association (DGBA) have joined forces to bring artist Benoît Maubrey’s ARENA public art installation to Market Square.

ARENA is an interactive mobile sound sculpture built in the shape of a small amphitheatre. It uses 320 recycled loudspeakers and electronic pieces, functioning as a stage for small events and concerts and as a site for local participation and self-expression.

ARENA will be installed under the overhang of City Hall in Market Square on Friday, February 8, 2019 until Friday, March 15, 2019. The sound stage will run from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The public, local artists, musicians, choral groups and organizations can interact with the sculpture two different ways:

  • Calling a telephone number and playing music for up to three minutes
  • Relaying songs and messages via Bluetooth and individual smartphones

When it’s not being used by you, the sculpture plays sounds of a mountain stream.

If you have questions about the sculpture during its installation, please call Downtown Guelph Business Association at 519-836-6144 or email events@downtownguelph.com
