Safe Semester kicks off September 7

Macdonell and Wyndham streets closed Fridays and Saturdays 10 p.m.–4 a.m.

Guelph’s Safe Semester runs September 7 to 29 with a goal of supporting a safe and enjoyable environment downtown for businesses, residents and students.

Closing the streets in this area allows pedestrians to enjoy Guelph’s downtown nightlife for the month of September. Macdonell Street will be closed between the Macdonell parking lot and the West Parkade, and Wyndham Street is closed between Carden Street and Cork Street on the following dates:

  • September 7 and 8
  • September 14 and 15
  • September 21 and 22
  • September 28 and 29

Street closures also mean no on-street parking in this area between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. Residents and visitors in the area can park for free in the available parking lots. Any cars parked on closed streets during Safe Semester will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Accessible portable washrooms and a taxi stand will be available at Guelph Central Station at the east end of Carden Street.

Over its eight-year run, Safe Semester has brought year-over-year improvement to downtown safety as summer winds down and students return. The program improves road safety and decreases littering, public urination and illegal parking.

Guelph Transit

Late night bus service travelling between Platform 11 at Guelph Central Station and the University Centre starts September 7 from 12:30 a.m. until the last bus leaves the University Centre at 3:30 a.m. Visit guelphtransit.ca to learn more.
