Construction notice: Princess Street sidewalk construction starts in August

Division Street to Clarke Street West

About the project

Sidewalks on Princess Street are being extended from Division Street to Clarke Street West to implement the Sidewalk Needs Assessment Study approved by Council in July 2017. This street has been identified as a priority due to its proximity to an elementary school and recreational facilities, and due to the lack of sidewalks on either side of the street. Adding a sidewalk to the west side of Princess Street improves accessibility.

City staff evaluated both sides of the road and selected the west side for the sidewalk for the following reasons:

  • There is sufficient room in the public right of way to accommodate a standard 1.5 metre sidewalk with no impacts to private property;
  • There are fewer driveways to cross;
  • There are fewer impacts to mature trees; and
  • It provides connections to existing sidewalks along the side yard of 44 Division Street, and to Avondale Avenue and Clarke Street West.

Construction begins mid-August

Construction of the sidewalk will start in mid-August and take approximately two weeks, weather permitting.

Lane reductions

There may be lane reductions during construction, however, traffic will be permitted in both directions.

Pedestrian access

There will be minimal interruption to pedestrian access.

Property access and parking

Every effort will be made to maintain access to driveways in the construction area during working hours (7 a.m.–7 p.m.). Construction activities and equipment movement may temporarily impact access to private property and delays should be expected.

Tree removals

Two trees will be removed between Avondale Avenue and Clarke Street. The City will look for opportunities to plant new trees in the boulevard to replace the trees that were removed.

Construction map

A map shows sidewalk extensions plans for the west side of Princess Street. Two X's mark the spot where two trees will be removed.

The City appreciates your patience, understanding and co-operation during this important construction project. Project details and any updates will be posted on guelph.ca/construction.
