UPDATE: Construction notice: York trunk sewer work continues

Update: Microtunnelling work is expected to start July 9.

Eramosa River Park, Florence Lane and Brockville Avenue

The York Trunk Sewer and Paisley-Clythe Feedermain Project is a multi-phased project to expand Guelph’s water distribution infrastructure and install a new trunk sanitary sewer link from the west to the east side of the city.

Work in this phase will take place between Boult Avenue and Victoria Road, including work along the recreational trails, and a complete reconstruction of Brockville Avenue. This next construction stage will include 265 metres of 1200mm diameter sanitary sewer installation using microtunnelling technology along Florence Lane between Lawrence Avenue and Hayes Avenue.

Construction to begin middle of June

While work on this project has begun, work along Florence Lane is expected to commence in the middle of June for approximately six weeks.

Microtunneling work starts July 9

To install the sewer, crews will use microtunnelling machine instead of traditional excavation methods.  As the microtunneling work progresses, there are frictional forces that increase against the boring machine. Crews will be onsite starting July 9 from Monday through Saturday, working 24 hours per day (two 12-hour shifts) to ensure frictional forces are kept low and to reduce the risk of the pipe getting stuck.

The following mitigation measures are being taken to reduce the noise from this operation.

  • Tunnel ventilation equipment will be equipped with fan silencers and pumps will be housed within a container
  • Pipes will be lowered by crane
  • Hauling of spoil material will only occur during the day
  • Site generator will be provided with sound reduction material

Property access

Every effort will be made to maintain access to driveways during construction working hours (7 a.m.– 7 p.m.). Construction activities and equipment movement may temporarily impact access to private property and delays should be expected.
