The City takes its obligations to protect the privacy of current and former employees seriously.
Our employees work hard and are committed to serving the citizens of Guelph. However, like any large employer, we sometimes find ourselves having to dismiss an employee from service.
Historically, the City has not published the sum of severance payments to former employees. We recently received a request for this information filed under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. We have provided the requestor with this information, and are sharing it here.
While these severance costs are not insignificant, they average at about 0.75% of the City’s total compensation budget. The City has a financial reserve to fund severance payments.
