Construction set to begin on new parkade
Correction: January 29, 2018—The Norfolk Street footbridge will be closed beginning February 5. The City previously reported that this access would be maintained, however, the bridge will be closed at the start of the project to allow for site grading for the new parkade.
Guelph, Ont., January 25, 2018—As of 4 p.m. Sunday, February 4, the Wilson Street parking lot will be closed as the City and their contractor, Newton Group, prepare to board up the site for construction. The new parkade is expected to open end of summer 2019.
“This is an exciting project for the City and the community,” says Jamie Zettle, program manager, Parking. “It’s been 30 years since we built a parkade in Guelph and this one will provide 496 parking spaces—that’s an additional 414 spots in the downtown. This parkade will go a long way to help ease parking congestion in our downtown.”
The new parkade is part of the Council–approved Downtown Parking Master Plan. In addition to more parking spots, the parkade will offer dedicated bicycle parking facilities, electric vehicle charging stations and elevators for improved access, including access to the Norfolk Street footbridge.
The City is replacing the Norfolk Street footbridge as part of the project. The footbridge will be closed beginning February 5 with an expected reopening in late spring 2019.
“The Wilson Street parkade is the first of a number of improvements coming for parking in the downtown this year,” says Zettle. “Together with repair work at the West Parkade and new lighting and access gates at the East Parkade, these parking improvements will make it easier and more convenient to visit, shop and work in the downtown.
“We know that construction is disruptive. We appreciate the community’s patience as ‘We dig Wilson’ and make other improvements in the downtown.”
Free weekend parking
The City is offering free parking in the Wilson Street lot on Saturday, February 3 and Sunday, February 4. All vehicles must exit the lot by 4 p.m. on February 4.
Open for business
All businesses on Wilson Street will remain open during construction. Parking is available on Wilson Street between Carden Street and Macdonell Street, and along Carden and Macdonell Streets.
Accessing and parking downtown
Wilson Street will be closed from Gordon/Norfolk streets to Northumberland Street (City Hall) as of February 5.
Residents and visitors looking to park downtown can do so at the West Parkade and the Wyndham and Baker Street parking lots as well at any of the 600 available on-street parking spaces.
Follow the dig
Soon, residents can follow the progress of construction from the comfort of home or while at work by checking the City’s video and camera feeds on the Wilson Street project page via guelph.ca/construction or by following along on Twitter using #WeDigWilson.
