Guelph, Ont., September 05, 2017– The City is moving forward with implementing the Guelph Innovation District (GID) Secondary Plan, also known as Official Plan amendment 54.
The City is working with the Province of Ontario—a major landowner within the GID—to coordinate and implement a future mixed-use live/work development for the 436 hectare (1,000 acres) parcel of land in Guelph’s east end.
Policies within the GID secondary plan reflect years of public engagement and deal with:
- natural and cultural heritage
- site servicing and stormwater infrastructure
- public space
- land use and built form
“The secondary plan supports the development of the Guelph Innovation District: a compact, mixed-use community that will provide a variety of land uses for people to live, work, shop, play and learn,” says Melissa Aldunate manager of Policy Planning and Urban Design.
Highlights of the vision for the GID lands include:
Sustainable and energy efficient infrastructure
Building new infrastructure that is efficient, sustainable, green, and showcases low-impact development.
Multi-modal, pedestrian-focused connections
Making connections that serve the community, allow people to travel by foot or bike, and provide convenient transit services to access activities and destinations.
Diverse land uses and densities
Promoting mixed-use developments that provide accessible choices for living, working, shopping, playing and learning.
Creating employment opportunities that support the knowledge-based innovation sector, including agriculture, environment, information technology, advanced manufacturing, health and related sciences.
“We look forward to working with our partners and the community to encourage sustainable and appropriate development, and to attract investment to the Guelph Innovation District,” adds Peter Cartwright, general manager of Business Development and Enterprise Services.
The GID Secondary Plan was adopted by City Council in May 2014. Seven stakeholders appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board against the Official Plan amendment. All appeals were withdrawn by August 10, 2017 and the plan is now in full force and effect.
The GID lands are bordered by York Road to the north, Watson Parkway South to the east, the City of Guelph official limit to the south, and Victoria Road South to the west.
