Guelph’s Downtown Secondary Plan receives OPPI Excellence in Planning Award

Guelph, ON, November 8, 2013 – The City of Guelph’s Downtown Secondary Plan has received the 2013 Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) Excellence in Planning Award, within the category of Municipal Statutory Planning Studies, Reports and Documents.

The award names the City of Guelph and its consultant on the project, Urban Strategies.

OPPI celebrates professional planners and outstanding projects annually through the Excellence in Planning Awards. These awards are widely regarded as among the most prestigious awards given for planning achievement in Ontario.

“The Downtown Secondary Plan reflects the City’s longstanding goal to support the downtown’s vitality by attracting more people and jobs to downtown and to demonstrate that a thriving urban Downtown benefits all of Guelph,” said Todd Salter, general manager of Planning Services for the City of Guelph. “Receiving the Excellence in Planning Award is a great honour for the City. It is gratifying to see the work of our City staff and all of the community members who contributed to the development of the plan being recognized on a provincial level by our peers and colleagues.”

The 2013 OPPI Excellence in Planning Award was formally presented to David DeGroot, senior urban designer with the City of Guelph, and Tim Smith, senior associate with Urban Strategies, at an OPPI press conference earlier today.

About Guelph’s Downtown Secondary Plan

The Downtown Secondary Plan is a comprehensive vision for revitalizing downtown Guelph over the next 20 years. It addresses the requirements of both municipal and provincial growth plans by planning for increased residential development to complement continued commercial and employment growth and cultural activities in the downtown core. The plan is a compelling vision for the downtown core that promotes reconnection to the Speed River as a vital, community-wide asset. It also reinforces the historic character of downtown Guelph while responsibly and creatively planning for growth. In drafting the plan, the City’s planning department extensively consulted with community members and stakeholder groups through open houses and workshop sessions. For more information, visit
