City’s recycling facility employees released from hospital

Guelph Fire Department deems facility safe to reopen Guelph, ON, August 12 – Eight City employees have been released from Guelph General Hospital following exposure to an unknown substance on one of the sorting lines at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) this morning. The hospital assessed symptoms including irritated eyes, headache and difficulty breathing. After a thorough investigation, the Guelph Fire Department’s hazardous material team was unable to find or identify any traces of the unknown substance. The team tested and monitored the air quality at the recycling facility, and earlier this afternoon confirmed it is safe to reopen. The MRF has resumed regular recycling operations with approval from the Ministry of Labour following its site investigation. City temporarily closes recycling facility

Unknown substance on sorting line prompts closure Guelph, ON, August 12 – The City’s recycling facility—the Material Recovery Facility (MRF)—has been temporarily closed after an unknown substance came across one of the sorting lines at approximately 7:35 this morning, causing irritated eyes, headache, and difficulty breathing for staff working in close proximity. The Guelph Fire Department’s hazardous material team has been onsite investigating. At this time the Guelph Fire Department has not identified the substance. Eight City employees working at the MRF have been sent to Guelph General Hospital as a precaution. The City has contacted the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change and the Ministry of Labour (MOL) and an MOL representative is on site. City’s new recycling contract creates Guelph jobs

Detroit’s recyclables become Guelph’s $300,000 treasure GUELPH, ON, April 29, 2014 – Last night Council approved a contract with Recyclable Material Marketing (ReMM) and Rizzo Environmental Services to process up to 28,000 additional tonnes of recyclables from Detroit, Michigan at Guelph’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF). To process the additional recyclables, the City will operate a second work shift at the MRF and hire up to an additional 36 employees. This shift will run Monday to Friday from 3:30 to 11:30 p.m. in compliance with the facility’s Environmental Compliance Agreement issued by the Ministry of the Environment. The annual revenue generated from the contract will cover the facility’s operating and maintenance costs, compensation for the new employees, and provide an annual surplus of about $300,000.
