City temporarily closes recycling facility

Unknown substance on sorting line prompts closure Guelph, ON, August 12 – The City’s recycling facility—the Material Recovery Facility (MRF)—has been temporarily closed after an unknown substance came across one of the sorting lines at approximately 7:35 this morning, causing irritated eyes, headache, and difficulty breathing for staff working in close proximity. The Guelph Fire Department’s hazardous material team has been onsite investigating. At this time the Guelph Fire Department has not identified the substance. Eight City employees working at the MRF have been sent to Guelph General Hospital as a precaution. The City has contacted the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change and the Ministry of Labour (MOL) and an MOL representative is on site.
