Council approves City purchase of Guelph Innovation District lands

Guelph, Ont., November 30, 2017—City Council has approved a staff recommendation to submit the City’s Letter of Intent to purchase 98 hectares (243 acres) in the Guelph Innovation District lands, formerly known as the York District lands. “We’re pleased Council has approved this start to bold and innovative development in our city,” says Scott Stewart, deputy chief adminstative officer of Infrastructure, Development and Enterprise for the City. “We’re excited to be one step closer to making the Guelph Innovation District Secondary Plan come to life.” The City will be submitting their Letter of Intent to the Province immediately. The purchase will include the former Wellington Detention Centre lands, the Guelph Research Station lands and 15 hectares (38 acres) of conservation lands. Council Approves Plan for Innovation District in Guelph’s East End

Guelph City Council has approved the secondary plan for the 436 hectare (1,077 acre) plot of land known as the Guelph Innovation District located South of York Road and East of Victoria Road North which is expected to be home to close to 7,000 people and 9,000 jobs. The plan includes an innovative mix of land uses, including a new urban village, a mixed-use main street, a research park and an adaptive re-use area around the historic reformatory complex. Advancing Guelph’s Innovation District

McGuinty Government And City of Guelph Support Local Economy, Create Jobs June 30, Guelph, ON – Ontario and the City of Guelph signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will help enhance the local economy and create jobs over the coming years in the Guelph Innovation District. The District will meet employment and housing targets of Guelph’s Growth Management Strategy and the province’s Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe by supporting economic activities and jobs with a clean, green-economy and innovation focus. The MOU signed today commits a portion of provincially-owned land in the district to the city’s plan to create this new, innovative employment area. City launches Phase 3 planning process for York lands

Guelph Innovation District will be key to city’s future The City of Guelph has launched Phase 3 of its planning process for the York District lands, located southeast of the downtown. This Phase is intended to establish objectives and principles for the development of the lands, refine the range of uses, develop visual design concepts, and establish planning implementation tools for the area. These tools will include Official Plan policies, land use designations, and Community Energy Plan implementation opportunities, among others. The York lands are significant due to their sheer size, at 426 hectares (1,052 acres). This is close to the total current employment land inventory elsewhere in the city, which totals 433 hectares.
