Council Approves Plan for Innovation District in Guelph’s East End

Guelph City Council has approved the secondary plan for the 436 hectare (1,077 acre) plot of land known as the Guelph Innovation District located South of York Road and East of Victoria Road North which is expected to be home to close to 7,000 people and 9,000 jobs. The plan includes an innovative mix of land uses, including a new urban village, a mixed-use main street, a research park and an adaptive re-use area around the historic reformatory complex. Advancing Guelph’s Innovation District

McGuinty Government And City of Guelph Support Local Economy, Create Jobs June 30, Guelph, ON – Ontario and the City of Guelph signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will help enhance the local economy and create jobs over the coming years in the Guelph Innovation District. The District will meet employment and housing targets of Guelph’s Growth Management Strategy and the province’s Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe by supporting economic activities and jobs with a clean, green-economy and innovation focus. The MOU signed today commits a portion of provincially-owned land in the district to the city’s plan to create this new, innovative employment area. Guelph receives $85,000 to fund innovation cluster strategy

GUELPH, ON, June 4, 2009 – Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada announced yesterday Guelph will receive $85,000 in federal funding to support an economic development “cluster” strategy focused on the innovations sectors and, more specifically, agricultural and environmental technologies. “This funding will support a strategic plan for the Guelph Innovation District – an important step forward in the development of these lands,” said Mayor Karen Farbridge. “Guelph has the opportunity to be a provincial leader in innovation and the green economy, and this strategy will help us get there.” The funding goes to Guelph Partnership for Innovation which will coordinate it on behalf of the City and other Guelph Innovation District study partners. City launches Phase 3 planning process for York lands

Guelph Innovation District will be key to city’s future The City of Guelph has launched Phase 3 of its planning process for the York District lands, located southeast of the downtown. This Phase is intended to establish objectives and principles for the development of the lands, refine the range of uses, develop visual design concepts, and establish planning implementation tools for the area. These tools will include Official Plan policies, land use designations, and Community Energy Plan implementation opportunities, among others. The York lands are significant due to their sheer size, at 426 hectares (1,052 acres). This is close to the total current employment land inventory elsewhere in the city, which totals 433 hectares.
