Environmental investigation work to be completed adjacent to Fountain Street parking lot starting March 9

Guelph, Ont., March 3, 2016—Beginning Wednesday, March 9, engineering consultants and contractors hired by the City of Guelph will be working along Fountain Street adjacent to the Fountain Street parking lot, and on Wyndham Street between Fountain Street and Surrey Street. The City will also be working on the Union Gas property on Surrey Street near Gordon Street. The City is conducting environmental investigations around the site of the historical coal gasification plant on Fountain Street and is installing wells and soil vapour probes for ongoing environmental monitoring. Work is being carried out by GHD Ltd. and their subcontractors. Government of Canada and FCM support study of environmental impacts of historical coal gasification plant in Guelph

The City of Guelph is posting this news release on behalf of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities July 7, 2015, Guelph, ON – The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, and Raymond Louie, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), and Acting Mayor of the City of Vancouver, BC, today announced a Green Municipal Fund TM grant of $175,000 to the City of Guelph. The City is using the funds for soil and groundwater testing as part of a multi-phase environmental study around a former coal gasification plant. Surrey Street geotechnical and environmental investigation

Beginning Monday, April 13, 2015, engineering consultants and contractors hired by the City of Guelph will be working on Surrey Street between Gordon Street and Wyndham Street. The City is conducting geotechnical and environmental investigations for infrastructure repair planning, and installing wells and soil vapour probes for ongoing environmental monitoring of the Fountain Street parking lot which was the site of a coal-gassification plant from 1871-1957. Work is being carried out by MTE Consultants Inc. and their subcontractors. Drilling is expected to occur over a two–day period, with contractors returning to take samples from monitoring wells on a periodic basis. All wells and holes are being drilled on public (City of Guelph) property. There are no road closures associated with the work.
