Speedvale Avenue
Stevenson Street to Waverley Drive

LANE REDUCTIONS START MAY 22
The reconstruction of Speedvale Avenue from Stevenson Street to Waverley Drive is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 22 and will be completed over two years. Two-way traffic will be maintained throughout construction, but motorists can expect delays.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Stage 1 – May 22 to October
The City has hired Drexler Construction Ltd. to replace watermains, sewers and reconstruct the roadway along Speedvale Avenue between Stevenson Street and Waverly Drive.

Stage 2 - October to April 2013
Guelph Hydro, Bell Canada and Rogers Cable will relocate utilities along Speedvale Avenue. Utility relocation work is expected to take about 5 months.

Stage 3 – April 2013
Next spring, the contractor will widen the roadway, add bike lanes, replace curbs, gutters, sidewalks and finish the road surface.

DRIVEWAY ACCESS AND PARKING
Every effort will be made to maintain access to homes and businesses during reconstruction. There will be times when access to driveways will be restricted and residents will be required to park on adjacent streets.

If you are displaced by construction, please contact the
Guelph By-law Enforcement Office at 519-836-7275.

INSPECTING PROPERTIES BEFORE RECONSTRUCTION
Oza Inspections may contact you to arrange an interior/exterior inspection of your home and/or building to assess any existing damage. This information will be used to determine the contractor’s responsibility in the unlikely event of property damage during reconstruction.

SANITARY SEWER AND WATER SERVICES
The City will be replacing sanitary sewer and water services within the City’s road allowance. In some areas, service piping on private property may need to be repaired or replaced.

We recommend you contact a plumber to check the condition of your services. The property owner is solely responsible for the repair or replacement of service piping on private property.

SERVICE INTERRUPTIONS
The City will make every effort to maintain sanitary sewer and water service to properties during reconstruction. As services are transferred to the new watermains, short interruptions (up to a few hours during normal working hours), can be expected. Advanced written notice will be provided prior to any planned service interruption.

PRIVATE LANDSCAPING AND BOULEVARD GARDENS
In order to replace underground services and reconstruct the sidewalk and boulevard, full access to the City’s road allowance will be required. If you wish to keep landscaping features or plantings on the City’s road allowance (boulevard gardens), please remove them in advance of reconstruction. Please delay any driveway improvements or new boulevard plantings until reconstruction is complete.

WASTE COLLECTION
Your waste collection schedule will not be affected by construction. Please continue to place your green, blue and clear waste at the curb for collection.

WHO TO CONTACT
Please feel free to contact the construction inspector with any questions you may have about construction.

Why come to the open house?

You are invited to view presentation panels and ask questions about traffic, access to properties and learn about the project in general. You are also encouraged to provide comments to City staff and consultants.

Construction starts mid-June

The City will install a new 400mm watermain from Clair tower to Poppy Drive. Construction is scheduled to start in mid-June and will continue until the end of August. Motorists are asked to follow marked detours traffic will be reduced through the work zone.

About the project

To accommodate growth in the south end Guelph, the City installed a 400mm watermain under the Hanlon Expressway in March 2009. Then the City extended the watermain along Clair Road West from Crawley Road to the Clair tower booster station in 2011.

This year, the City will further improve the system by extending the watermain from the Clair tower booster station to the south end of Poppy Drive. The City will also install a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Clair Road West and Southgate Drive.

Guelph crews put finishing toucheson downtown CN Rail bridge
One-day traffic disruption expected Sunday, May 6

GUELPH, ON, May 4, 2012 – The City is preparing to complete some finishing touches on the new CN railway bridge arching over Wyndham Street in downtown Guelph.

The work will require a one-day traffic interruption on Sunday, May 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. when Guelph Police will control traffic on Wyndham Street between Carden and Farquhar Streets. Emergency and Guelph Transit vehicles will be permitted to travel through the work zone.

Earlier this week the City opened this section of Wyndham Street after more than two years of construction. The road now includes new sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides, new lighting and landscaping, and a completely renewed railway bridge arching over the street. Minor landscaping and utility work will continue over the next few weeks.

This year, construction in the area continues as the City works with its partners to bring local, regional and national transportation together in downtown Guelph. The City is hoping to start renovations inside Guelph’s VIA Rail station in summer 2012 pending approval from the federal government.

With those renovations complete VIA Rail, Greyhound, GO Transit and Guelph Transit will operate out of Guelph Central Station on Carden Street.

Guelph Transit service is scheduled to move into Guelph Central Station on Sunday, May 13.

The City hoped to replace the CN rail bridge, renew the road and re-open the street by the March 31, 2011.

Wyndham Street was closed to traffic between Carden and Wellington Streets when the City began replacing watermains and sewers and other underground utilities in fall 2009. The road was open from winter 2009 to spring 2010 when the City began replacing the 100 year-old CN railway bridge.

In 2010 the City found it difficult to obtain the necessary approvals to continue construction according to the original schedule. The City faced a number of challenges that delayed construction:

Obtaining construction approvals from CN Rail, Metrolinx, Rail America, VIA Rail took at least six months longer than expected.

At times, construction activity along Carden Street – Guelph Central Station and Market Square – created scheduling conflicts between these projects.

Creating a rail diversion to maintain VIA and GO train traffic made the project very complex.

Arrival of GO train service and Metrolinx’s plans to continue work in the area (completing railway track and platform, building a pedestrian tunnel and passenger drop off area) impacted the City’s original construction schedules and plans.

The federal, provincial and municipal government shared equally in the $ 8,400,000 cost of replacing the CN Rail bridge and completely renew Wyndham Street.

Poppy Drive to Maltby Road

The City of Guelph has hired Cox Construction Inc. to remove and replace the asphalt surface, improve gravel shoulders and driveways, and mark bike lanes along Gordon Street from Poppy Drive to Maltby Road.

Traffic interruptions May 9-23

The road work will start on Wednesday, May 9 and is expected to take about two weeks.

Northbound and southbound traffic in the work zone will be controlled using flags, and motorists can expect traffic delays during construction. The City expects to restore two lanes of traffic during evenings and weekends.

In the interest of safety for motorists and construction personnel, speed limits will be reduced in the construction area and motorists are asked to obey all traffic signs and signals.

Access to properties

The contractor will make every effort to maintain access to all driveways, but at times your driveway may be temporarily blocked by construction equipment and/or operations during normal working hours. All driveway access should be restored by the end of each working day.

Community Room

WHY COME TO THE OPEN HOUSE?

You are invited to view presentation panels and ask questions about traffic, access to properties and learn about the project in general. You are also encouraged to provide comments to City staff and consultants.

CONSTRUCTION STARTS MID-JUNE

The City will install a new 400mm watermain from Clair tower to Poppy Drive. Construction is scheduled to start in mid-June and will continue until the end of August. Motorists are asked to follow marked detours as traffic will be reduced through the work zone.

Wyndham Street to re-open during the first week of May
We’re happy to announce that construction on Wyndham Street and the CN Railway bridge is almost complete. We thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we finish this important and complex project.

Wyndham Street line painting April 23-24
There will be minor traffic disruptions as the City completes line painting on Wyndham Street between Cork and Carden Streets.

New traffic signals April 25
Traffic lights at the intersection of Wyndham and Carden Streets will be activated on Wednesday, April 25.

Parking changes on Wyndham and Carden Streets
During the construction of Market Square and Guelph Central Station the City established about 15-20 temporary parking spaces on Wyndham Street between Macdonell and Carden Streets.

With traffic volumes returning to normal on Wyndham Street and buses moving into Guelph Central Station the City can safely accommodate six permanent parallel parking spaces in this area (see diagram below).

As of Tuesday May 1, on-street parking will no longer be permitted inside Guelph Central Station (Carden Street, east of Wyndham Street).

There are about 30 permanent parking spaces in Market Square and the City maintained the total number of accessible parking spaces in the area.
