Pottery classes and programs

The City of Guelph has been offering classes, workshops and open studio for more than 20 years. The Guelph Community Pottery Centre studio, located at 14 Edinburgh Road South, is equipped with 10 electric pottery wheels, two kilns, and all the essentials for creating pottery.

Children, youth and family programs

Pottery – Family Night

Get creative with your family and have fun together in our Pottery Studio! Learn some basic techniques in hand-building forms and try the wheel together. All family members will have the chance to participate and create projects. One adult must register with child(ren) up to age 12.

Garden Exploration and Creations

Parent and children are welcome to join us for a nature scavenger hunt and fun outdoor activities. Moving inside, bring your imagination to help create your very own clay creature and its home.

Clay Creations (parent and child)

No matter your level of experience, these two classes will be fun for both parent and child. This not meant for parents to help their child create something. Rather, it is a time to be together, each learning how to create in clay. We will make creations using hand building techniques including pinch pots, slab and coil building. Expect to bring home lots of treasures times two!

Mothers’ Day Build-a-Gift

Don’t miss the opportunity to create a handmade gift out of clay for Mom’s special day. In this two hour session, our instructors will assist your child in creating a sentimental gift that mom will cherish for life.

Fathers’ Day Build-a-Gift

In this two hour session, children will be introduced to the basics of clay while having the opportunity to build a creative gift for Dad on Father’s Day.

Garden Pinch Pot

Use your creativity and imagination to make your own pinch pot creature or garden gnome. Creations will be bisque fired and glazed in the colour of your choice or can be painted at home. There is some outdoor time exploring nature (weather permitting).

Kids ‘N’ Clay Adventures

In this action packed class, your adventurous young potter will construct coil pots, build pinch pots, and conquer the potter’s wheel. Participants will conclude their adventures with a final day of glazing, and return to claim their project after it has been fired.

Teen Pottery

Learn to throw on a potter’s wheel and have fun with exciting handbuilding techniques. Use these techniques to create mugs, bowls and a wide variety of objects. Exercise your imagination and practice your new skills to create meaningful objects and master the potter’s wheel.

Pottery on the Wheel

Concentrate solely on throwing on the potter’s wheel! Learn the fundamentals of wheel thrown pottery including trimming and assembling pieces. There will be glaze classes throughout the session which will be dedicated to glazing, decorating and finishing your pieces.

Couples Date Night

Be creative; get your hands dirty, and a glass of wine. What could be better? You will learn hand building techniques or how to throw on the potters’ wheel with your special someone. Once completed, select a glaze for your piece to be fired by our studio staff. Registrants will receive one complimentary drink from our local breweries and wineries. Additional drinks available at a surcharge. Finger foods will be provided. Have a fun evening out together while trying something new. Register separately.

Open Studio / Guild

Wheels, handbuilding tables and a great selection of glazes are offered during Open Studio. Guild volunteers are available to assist participants in studio procedures but will not provide instruction. No registration necessary. Only 12 spaces available each week, so come early! For experienced potters only – completion of two courses in wheel or handbuilding required to participate. Additional fees for materials. Buy a 10 hour pass at a discounted rate.

Age: 18+ years
Fee: $6 per hour or $50 for for a 10 hour pass, plus clay and firing fees.

  • Tuesdays, drop in from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

  • Completion of two courses in wheel or handbuilding required.
  • Participants are expected to follow studio procedures.
