New requests

Carts are available to new home owners.  Please contact Solid Waste Resources to arrange a Cart Request.

The City will provide your home with three carts: an 80-litre green cart for organics, a blue cart for recyclables and a grey cart for garbage. Your household will have the option to choose your preferred sizes of blue and grey carts.

Most households choose the extra-large blue cart and the large grey cart.  Please remember that the carts must stay at the home they are registered to, carts are to stay at the residence when residents move or sell.

Please be aware that carts may not be brand new, but will be fully cleaned and/or repaired prior to delivery.

Medium cart: depth - 54cm/21in, width - 49 cm/19in, height - 96cm/38in

Medium

Holds 120 litres/32 gallons (equivalent to approximately two standard bags)

Large cart: depth - 70cm/28in, width - 62cm/25in, height - 110cm/43in

Large

Holds 240 litres/64 gallons (equivalent to approximately four standard bags)

Extra large cart: depth - 87cm/34in, width - 64cm/25in, height - 113cm/45in

Extra large

Holds 360 litres/95 gallons (equivalent to approximately six standard bags)

Identify your carts

Write your address on your carts with a permanent marker in the space provided.  The carts belong to the City of Guelph and will be registered to your property.

Additional carts

Additional blue and grey carts are available for a service fee from the Waste Resource Innovation Centre at 110 Dunlop Drive. These carts are to be used for curbside collection purposes only. Additional carts may not be brand new, but will be fully cleaned and/or repaired prior to purchase.

Cost

  • Medium (120 litres/32 gallons): $32 + HST
  • Large (240 litres/64 gallons): $48 + HST
  • Extra-large (360 litres/95 gallons): $52 + HST

If delivery is required there is an additional fee of $20 + HST per cart.

You may also bring additional waste to the Waste Resource Innovation Centre for a disposal fee.

Lost or broken carts

Exchanges

If you prefer a different size of blue or grey cart, please make arrangements to have your cart picked up at the curb or clean it and bring it to the Waste Resource Innovation Centre (WRIC) Administration Office, located at 110 Dunlop Drive. Open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

There is a $35 + HST exchange fee per cart to cover the cost of delivery and cleaning. A reduced fee of $15 + HST per cart is an option if you prefer to clean and exchange your cart at the Waste Resource Innovation Centre.

Purchasing a cart exchange ticket

You can purchase a cart exchange ticket for $35 + HST at the following locations. Cash, Interac, Mastercard and Visa accepted at all locations.

Scheduling a curbside cart exchange

Schedule the exchange by calling Solid Waste Resources at 519-767-0598. Please have your purchased ticket on hand) and be ready to quote the serial number of the cart(s) to be exchanged. The serial number is stamped in white on the side of the cart.

Leave your empty cart(s) outside (against your home, garage or fence), visible from the curb. City staff will take care of the rest.

If your collection day takes place before your cart is exchanged, you can use your carts on your collection day and bring the empty carts back up to your house. Make sure to leave the cart that you wish to exchange outside (against your home, garage or fence), visible from the curb.

Have you recently moved?

New home owners and those who have moved to a new home within the last three months are exempt from paying the exchange fee.  Contact Solid Waste Resources at 519-767-0598.

Repairs

If your cart becomes damaged please contact Solid Waste Resources. You will need to provide your residential information, a description of the damage, and the serial number that is located on the side of the cart. For example, 814R#######.

Broken Latches

If your green cart is missing a latch, you may pick up a replacement latch for free at the following locations:
