The purpose of the Natural Heritage System is to establish a sustainable greenspace network throughout the City. The protection of the Natural Heritage System will be achieved through an update to the Official Plan. The Natural Heritage System and Policies proposed through Amendment 42 to the Offiical Plan will replace the current Official Plan Core and Non-Core Greeland policies and mapping in accordance with the Provincial Policy Statement. On May 20, 2010, Official Plan Amendment 42, the second phase of the Official Plan Update (OPA 39 - Growth Plan Conformity was Phase 1) was considered at a public meeting of Council. At the meeting Council directed staff to bring forward the Natural Heritage System components of the Official Plan Amendment for Council's consideration on July 27, 2010. On July 27, 2010 Council adopted OPA 42. As Official Plan Amendment 42 concerns consistency with the Provincial Policy Statement, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing is the approval authority and the Minister has 180 days to make a decision on the amendment.
