Couples wishing to be married in Ontario must apply for a marriage licence. The licence is valid anywhere in Ontario.
The application must be signed by both individuals getting married and submitted with the supporting identification and documents listed below in person by the applicant(s) to the marriage licence issuer at ServiceGuelph, City Hall, 1 Carden Street. Although it is not required by law both parties are encouraged to attend when obtaining a marriage licence. The marriage licence will be issued the same day providing all documentation is complete.

Identification
Each applicant must provide two (2) pieces of original, government-issued identification. One piece MUST be current photo identification to prove your legal name and age. You will need:
1. A Birth Certificate (along with any change of name certificates), Current Passport, Canadian Citizenship card, or Permanent Resident card
AND
2. Current Photo identification; one of the following:
i. Driver’s Licence
ii. Photo Health card
iii. Current Passport
Note: Documents in a language other than English or French must be translated by a certified translator.
Minors
Applicants 16 or 17 years of age require parental consent. A Form 6 – Consent of Parent or Gaurdian to Marry must be completed and signed by both parents/guardian(s). Contact our office for further information.
Canadian Divorce
If a previous marriage was dissolved or annulled in Canada, the ORIGINAL or COURT CERTIFIED copy of the Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce must be submitted. A divorce judgement is not acceptable. Original or certified copies may be obtained from the courthouse in the city in which the divorce was granted. Photocopies are not acceptable. All documents will be returned.
Foreign Divorce
If a divorce was granted outside of Canada, please contact ServiceGuelph for additional forms, information and instructions.
Interpreters
If you do not understand or read English, you must provide your own interpreter and he/she must provide identification.
Expiry Date
A marriage licence obtained in Ontario is valid for use anywhere in Ontario for a period of three (3) months from the date of issue. There is no waiting period in the Province of Ontario between the date of issuance and marriage ceremony.
