Residential Greywater Reuse Pilot Program

Install a Greywater Reuse System

Terms and Conditions Frequently Asked Questions
In 2009 and 2010, the City of Guelph will work with local home builders and existing homeowners to install 30 grey water reuse systems into new home constructions and select home retrofit applications through its new Residential Greywater Reuse Pilot Program.

These homes will feature greywater reuse technology that will collect greywater from household showers and baths, purify the greywater collected, then use the purified greywater to satisfy home toilet flushing water needs.

Toilet flushing represents approximately 30% of daily water use in the home. Using reclaimed greywater from showers and baths to flush toilets, eliminate toilet-based potable water use in the home, resulting in significant annual water and wastewater cost savings.

How does a residential greywater system work?

Water use in standard home

In a standard home, water from the municipal system is fed to each appliance and fixture. The greywater or wastewater produced from each appliance or fixture is then sent directly to the sanitary sewer as shown in the diagram below.
Home water use
Water use in a home with a greywater reuse system

Homes which feature a greywater reuse system collect grey water from daily showers, and filter and purify the greywater to be used in the home where potable water (drinking water quality) is not required, such as toilet flushing. The diagram below illustrates water use in a home with a greywater reuse system.
