The Guelph Civic Museum will be expanding its gift shop when it moves to its new location in the former Loretto Convent later this year. In addition to its offerings related to the history of Guelph, the Museum Gift Shop will sell handmade, reasonably priced, whimsical, interesting gifts crafted by local artists. Revenues generated from the gift shop are used towards the operating budget of Guelph Museums.

Who We Are

The Guelph Civic Museum has a collection of over 30,000 artifacts including 4,000 photographs, in addition to archival materials. Collections relate to the history of the city of Guelph and are used in the permanent and temporary exhibitions that relate the City’s social, cultural and industrial history.

The new museum, which makes use of the historic Loretto Convent building and grounds, will be more than twice the size of the current facility, with appropriate storage for artifact and archival collections. It will also have a larger children’s gallery, research room, space for volunteers and students to work and a meeting room. The new facility has also been designed to the LEED Silver standard.

The new museum is expected to open to the public in early 2012.

How to Participate

Local artists are welcome to apply. By “local” we mean Guelph and the surrounding area. To apply, please send us an email with your answers to the questions on page 2 of this form AND provide us a way to view your work (more details on page 2). Applicants are asked to apply no later than Friday, December 30, 2011 but encouraged to apply sooner.

What it costs you

There is no fee to apply. Upon acceptance, the Guelph Civic Museum will retain 30% of all sales. Artists receive 70% of the price their goods. This is the only charge for participation. Artists determine their prices, but because this is a museum gift shop, we hope for a range of prices and ask that no piece be priced over $100 without prior approval.

Apply to participate by sending us your answers to these questions over email:

1) Who are you & how do we reach you?

Please include: Artist Name, Business Name (if different), Email, Phone.

2) Where can we see your work?

Website, link to flickr, etc. or if no media site, then please attach jpegs or pdfs that represent what you would like to sell at the Guelph Civic Museum Gift Shop. Feel free to give descriptions of what we’re looking at if you need or want to.

3) Reflecting on your answer to #2 above, what do you have in mind to sell and how many pieces do you have available?

Send us these answers with your samples/link to: judi.prigione@guelph.ca. Do this and we’ll call it an application! The sooner we get it from you, the sooner we’ll get back to you.

The fine print

If accepted, we will ask you to sign your agreement to the following:

that you understand that 30% of the proceeds from sale of your work will be retained by the Guelph Civic Museum (Guelph Museums)

that you understand that Guelph Civic Museum (Guelph Museums) allows a 10% discount on the retail cost of items in their Gift Shops to eligible patrons including Guelph Museums Members, volunteers and staff however the 70% received by the artist will be calculated from the original retail price set by the artist. Guelph Museums will absorb the cost of this discount in the 30% they retain from the original retail price.

that you’ll be willing to restock in a timely manner (as needed to guarantee adequate inventory)

that you’ll give your best effort to completing all the necessary supporting paperwork (artist agreement/consignment form, inventory sheets, price tags – if unique to your item)

that you’ll provide a brief artist’s bio that may be displayed in the gift shop and provide business cards that can be given to purchasers with any items sold.

that you’ll have or obtain required business licenses in place to offer your goods for sale and accurately handle any applicable taxes.

that you understand the Museum will handle your goods responsibly and carefully, but in the end cannot be responsible for unexpected damage or theft to goods

that the Museum cannot be responsible for any negligence on the part of Artists in manufacturing of your goods or in truthful reporting of sales tax or income
