Construction update: Howitt Street water and sewer construction

Wyndham Street South to Neeve Street and Margaret Street

The City is working with Drexler Construction Limited to upgrade underground water and sewer pipes on Howitt Street from Wyndham Street to Neeve Street and Margaret Street. This work is the second stage of the Arthur Street sanitary trunk sewer project. The construction work includes the installation of sanitary trunk, storm sewer, water main, curb and gutter, sidewalks,  driveway aprons, as well as asphalt paving.

Work will continue through winter

Map shows project areas that are complete and scheduled

Project work has been delayed due to difficult site conditions and complications with underground utilities. Contractors will continue working through winter as weather permits.

All work associated with the Howitt Street project from Wyndham Street to Margaret Street will be completed by the end of December including curbs and repaving. Sidewalks, line painting, driveways entrance repair and landscape restoration will be done next year.

Work on Margaret Street will begin on or about January 9 and take about two months to complete, weather permitting. This work includes upgrading water and sewer pipes under the roadway. Remaining work for the section of Howitt Street between Margaret Street to Neeve Street will begin after Margaret Street is completed, and weather permitting.

Upcoming traffic changes

Howitt Street from Wyndham Street to Margaret Street will remain closed and only open to local access  once work wraps up in December.

Howitt Street between Margaret Street to Neeve Street will be fully closed during the work in the new year.

Driveway access

Margaret Street residents will be affected by long-term driveway access restrictions due to the nature of the construction. Residents in this situation can park on the north side of Howitt Street between Margaret Street and Wyndham Street.

Residents and businesses with short-term driveway access interruptions are asked to please park on side streets during such interruptions, and to request an on-street parking exemption if parking overnight.

If construction activities require you to park on-street overnight: Please contact the City’s Bylaw office to request an on-street parking exemption at 519-836-7275, or visit guelph.ca/parking and follow the link to Overnight parking to request an exemption online.

The City of Guelph appreciates your patience, understanding and co-operation during this important construction project. Project details and updates are available on the City’s website at guelph.ca/construction.
