Construction Notice: Howitt Street and Margaret Street closures start August 22

Wyndham Street to Neeve Street

Map showing areas of constructionThe City is working with Drexler Construction Ltd to upgrade underground water and sewer pipes on Howitt and Margaret Streets. Construction will begin on or about August 22. Completion is expected in December, weather permitting.

This is the second stage of the Arthur Street sanitary trunk sewer project. Construction includes the installation of water and sewer pipes, and the replacement of curb, gutter and sidewalks.

Traffic impacts

Howitt Street will be closed to through traffic during construction. The detour route is via Neeve Street to Wellington Street.

Driveway access

Some residents will be affected by long-term driveway access restrictions due to the nature of the construction. Residents in this situation will be contacted directly by City staff to discuss details and arrange alternate parking.

Residents and businesses with short-term driveway access interruptions are asked to please park on side streets during such interruptions, and to request an on-street parking exemption if parking overnight.

If construction activities require you to park on-street overnight: Please contact the
City’s By-Law office to request an on-street parking exemption at 519-836-7275, or visit guelph.ca/parking and follow the link to Overnight parking to request an exemption online.

Property inspections

OZA Inspections Ltd. may contact you to arrange an interior/exterior inspection of your home and/or building. This inspection is a proactive measure intended to assess the condition of properties in the area before the start of construction. This information will be used to determine the contractor’s responsibility in the unlikely event of property damage during the reconstruction. There is no cost for this inspection.

Service interruptions

Every effort will be made to maintain water and sanitary service to properties during the construction. Households and businesses will be notified in the case of an interruption.

Regular garbage collection will be maintained during construction. On collection days when access is restricted by construction operations, construction crews will place containers at an accessible location for collection. Please ensure that your address is clearly marked on your containers so they can be returned to you after collection.

The City appreciates your patience, understanding and co-operation during this important construction project. Project details and any updates will be posted on guelph.ca/construction.
