City invites artists to apply for RBC Market Mornings program

Guelph, Ont., June 16, 2016 – The City of Guelph invites emerging and professional artists to submit proposals to be considered for this summer’s RBC Market Mornings program.

This is the third installment of RBC Market Mornings, a cultural initiative sponsored by RBC Royal Bank that features artist-led opportunities for the community to participate in free outdoor art-making activities in public space. This year’s location is at Guelph Farmers’ Market.

Over the course of select Saturday mornings this summer, the public will be invited to contribute to an artist-led creation of a temporary artwork piece that will be installed onsite at the end of the project.

Artists are asked to submit innovative, thought-provoking project proposals that respond to the public area and green space in front of the Farmers’ Market, creating a signature presence—one that is whimsical and/or colourful, plays with scale, and provides excitement and interest for the community as a whole.

“The market is located at a major gateway to the downtown core,” says Ella Pauls, the City’s manager of Cultural Affairs and Tourism. “We’re looking to create a highly visible temporary installation to be enjoyed by pedestrians and cyclists, as well as those travelling in vehicles.”

Artists wishing to be considered must submit a brief (maximum two-page) project proposal including a statement of what the artist hopes to accomplish, a description of the artist’s vision for community involvement, and a summary of qualifications by Friday, July 1.

Application information and program details are posted on the City’s website at guelph.ca/marketmornings.
