Greg Denton wraps up residency with ‘Artist Talk’

Guelph, ON, November 2, 2015 – On Saturday, November 7, artist Greg Denton will wrap up his residency with a public talk about his 100 Portraits/100 Poppies—Sitting in Remembrance project.

Denton, whose residency and work is part of the City’s 2015 Artist in Residence program, will discuss the project and how the piece fits into his larger body of work.

During the summer months, Denton created a suite of 100 portrait paintings in oil, depicting living military personnel, cadets, and veterans in uniform and wearing a poppy. He also included people without military backgrounds who have been affected by war and loss, or who have been inspired by the poem, In Flanders Fields.

“Greg’s project has had a significant impact in the community. He’s honoured the contribution of service men and women, past and present, and enhanced the commemorative experience for residents and visitors while paying homage to the 100th anniversary of the writing of Lt.-Col John McCrae’s poem, In Flanders Fields,” says Jen Rafter, the City’s cultural program and event coordinator.

The Artist Talk begins at 1 p.m. in Council Chambers, located within City Hall. Rafter encourages those interested in attending to register in advance by contacting her at jen.rafter@guelph.ca.

Rafter adds, “Greg’s talk will be a celebration of his residency and will allow many of the 100 portrait sitters to meet each other and exchange stories about their experiences.”

Denton’s portraits can be viewed until November 30 in the Ashlar Gallery at the Boarding House Arts Building, located at 6 Dublin Street South.
