City improves public waste drop-off area

Changes offer better access, traffic flow and waste diversion

Guelph, Ont., November 18, 2015 – On November 23, the City will open a new, larger public drop-off area for garbage and recyclables at the Waste Resource Innovation Centre.

“These improvements are great news for Guelph residents,” says Catherine McCausland, manager of operations with Solid Waste Resources. “The new public drop-off area will reduce wait times, and improve traffic flow and customer service.”

The new drop-off area will offer three entry gates:

  • Gate 1: Public Waste Drop-Off area with an additional weighing scale and 15 waste disposal bins,
  • Gate 2: Commercial vehicle scale, and
  • Gate 3: Public Recycling Zone and the Household Hazardous Waste Depot.

Gates 1 and 3 are for public use, while gate 2 is for commercial vehicles.

Window glass will now be accepted at gate 1, a fee will apply. The public drop-off area at gate 3 will now accept plastic film, foam polystyrene and bulky rigid plastics for free recycling.

The current waste drop-off fees continue to apply and recyclables can still be dropped off for free.

Tips for loading your vehicle and navigating the new drop-off area

Loading a car in this order will allow for a faster and more direct drop off route, make unloading easier and may even save you money:

  1. Waste materials (e.g. household garbage, furniture, etc.)
  2. Recyclables (e.g. aluminum, cardboard, glass, plastics containers, etc.).
  3. Household hazardous waste (e.g. compact fluorescent bulbs, batteries, cleaners, paint, motor oil, etc.).
