City’s splash pads, wading pools open Saturday

Guelph, ON, June 27, 2014 – The City’s splash pads and wading pools officially open for the summer season tomorrow, Saturday, June 28.

The splash pads in Waverley Park, Hanlon Creek Park, Norm Jary Park, and the West End Community Centre operate daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mico Valeriote Park wading pool is open from noon to 4 p.m. and the wading pools in Sunny Acres and Exhibition parks are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 to 7 p.m.

Admission is free. The splash pads and wading pools operate daily until September 1 (weather permitting).

South end splash pad project

Meanwhile, construction work is delayed on a new splash pad in Guelph’s South End Community Park.

In 2013, the City of Guelph hired a general contractor to build a new washroom facility, widen the existing stone laneway, landscape, and create two-barrier free parking spaces. As part of the agreement the contractor was to hire a City-directed sub-contractor to design and build a splash pad.

However, earlier this month, the City learned the splash pad sub-contractor has decided to not enter into the contract with the general contractor. As a result, the City will reissue a request for proposal for the splash pad project.

“We hoped to open the splash pad this summer, but we’re experiencing a delay,” says Karen Sabzali, manager, Parks and Open Spaces. “We are working closely with the general contractor to ensure the project is built as it was specified in the request for proposal.”

Sabzali adds that depending on weather conditions, construction could begin in late fall. “We’ll award the contract as quickly as possible so we can begin construction in late fall, and open the splash pad next summer.”

In 2003, City Council approved a splash pad as part of a master plan for development of South End Community Park. The splash pad, to be located beside Nick’s Dragonfly Playground, is part of the $1.1 million park project.

Meanwhile, construction of the washroom facility, widening of the existing stone laneway, landscaping, and two barrier-free parking spaces is on schedule and an opening date is set for this summer.
